Tasks for the Month

General

The longer the grass, the faster it grows, so mow lawns as regularly as you can.

Sycamore seedlings sprout as thickly as mustard and cress where they get the chance. Pull them up before they get a hold.

Indoor plants such as azaleas, pelargoniums, ivies and Easter cactus can be set outside until early September. Continue to feed them as usual.

Herbs such as tarragon and savory can be cut back hard if they are getting straggly. They will soon produce fresh growth.

Pinch out flower heads of chives to increase production of leaf.

Trees and shrubs such as cherries, lilacs, crab apples and medlars which are normally propagated by grafting may start throwing up suckers from the rootstock. As with roses, these must be dealt with quickly.Above ground, cut off suckers flush with the trunk. Below ground, take them back as far as you can to the root system before severing them.
